Choosing the size of a Christmas tree skirt

By West Lancashire Creations · Updated 25 October 2026

Decide what you want to cover

Measure the stand’s widest footprint first. Then decide how much fabric you want to show beyond it. The skirt’s advertised size is commonly a diameter, but confirm this before comparing listings. Radius is half the diameter: mixing the two can produce a surprisingly large purchase.

Try a floor mock-up

Lay a tape measure across the floor at the proposed diameter. Check it against the lower branches and nearby furniture. Some people prefer the fabric tucked inside the branch outline; others like a generous visible border. There is no single correct tree-to-skirt ratio.

Check the centre and fastening

Look for the central opening and the way the skirt closes around the trunk or pole. A slit-and-tie design can be convenient after the tree is assembled. Make sure ties and loose fabric remain away from stand controls and do not create a trip point along a walking route.

Choose for the room you use

A washable fabric may suit a busy room, but check the actual care label before buying. Consider how it will look with gifts placed on it and how you will reach the water reservoir if you have a real tree. Fold and store it dry after Christmas to make next year’s setup easier.
