Choosing a stand for a real Christmas tree

By West Lancashire Creations · Updated 25 October 2026

Take two numbers to the shop

Record the tree height and trunk diameter where the stand will grip. Compare both with the manufacturer’s limits; meeting only one is not enough. A broad tree, a narrow space or an uneven floor can also affect the suitability of the setup. Follow the stand’s complete assembly instructions.

Think about daily watering

A visible water level and an opening you can reach make the routine easier. Reservoir capacity is useful, but does not tell you how often your particular tree will need topping up. Check regularly and keep the cut base covered with water, following your grower’s care advice.

Choose a mechanism you can operate

Screw clamps, pedal systems and other mechanisms have different setup steps. Consider whether you can reach the controls when the tree is in its final position. Plan for help lifting and positioning a large tree; a convenient mechanism does not remove the need for careful assembly.

Leave access after decorating

Place a collar or skirt only once the tree is secured and upright. Do not hide the reservoir so completely that checking water becomes difficult. If the tree leans, address the installation using the maker’s instructions before adding decorations; a decorative cover cannot correct an unsuitable stand.
